On March 29th a promotion ceremony was held for
several members of the West Orange Tora Dojo, including a promotion
to Brown Belt for our own Howard Sragow! Mazal Tov!
Demonstrations of advanced martial arts techniques were given as
well as an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about this
martial arts system, which has existed under Jewish auspices for
nearly forty years. Our special guest was Sensei Gene White, who
is a second degree Black Belt in the system.
What do you get when you cross Judaic philosophy with Chinese martial
arts? Tora Dojo. The brainchild of Grandmaster H.I. Sober, Toro
Dojo combines elements of traditional Karate and Kung Fu with Jewish
spirituality. Students begin by learning basic techniques (stances,
blocks, strikes and kicks). Once control is gained over these techniques,
a form of pre-arranged sparring is taught in order to learn use
the technique against an opponent.
In addition, “kata” (“form”
or “sequence”) is taught. Kata is a series of fighting
techniques performed against imaginary opponents, in which the student
learns to perfect his technique. Kata varies in difficulty, and
forms the basis on which the student is graded within the belting
system. Once proper control is attained, freestyle sparring is taught.
Students also practice breaking of cinder blocks and bricks. The
importance of “breaking” is to demonstrate to the student
his ability to transmit his energy fully. Self-defense is also emphasized.
