Ohr Torah originated from the minyan begun in the home of Elaine and Herman Scherman.  Eventually, the minyan purchased the house at 217 Pleasant Valley Way to continue services there.

Elaine and Herman Scherman deserve great credit for opening their home at 99 Pleasant Valley Way for those of us who were miles from AABJ&D; their hospitality included serving weekly kiddush.

After starting out as a "north branch" of AABJ&D, the minyan adopted a name - something like West Orange Orthodox Synagogue - before becoming Ohr Torah.
